Bana Witt

Bana Witt of San Francisco Ca, although not a Baba Lover, has consistently befriended Baba Lovers for over 30 years. Her poetry by many sources is listed with the old Beat Poets of the Bay Area, including the likes of Ginsburg, kerouac and Ferlinghetti.
We asked if she would contribute a poem, she suggested that we use this poem from her first book Compass in an Armored Car.

Haiku for Calliope

Spring day
the air is still
plum blossoms
fall slowly

Leettle Dog

Leetle dog in me lap in dah garden
Is de only ting I can find no harm in

Da Christian bang me door
Dah gangsta dey at war
Da locals cook da speed
Like it sumptin' dat dey need

Leetle dog in me lap in dah garden
Is de only ting I can find no harm in

Our leader dey ros clot
Dey claim virtue dey no got
Da power off today
Like inna dah tird world way

Leetle dog in me lap in dah garden
Is de only ting I can find no harm in

Tings are not like I bin told
Da wicked get da gold
To be honest --- no reward
Most got no bed and board!

Leetle dog in me lap in dah garden
Is de only ting I can find no harm in

Leetle dog in me lap
Der ain't much more dan dat

Art Lover

sometimes
we become more than a legend
sometimes
we become a drunken dreamer
rousing himself
to the certian footsteps of dawn
when he's just taken his hand
from the sleeping breast of night

When the sweetness of mother's milk
still clinging to our lips
and the hardness of the earth
beneath our uncalloused feet
we'll sing the new music
in new found voices
and bring to life
static images
from an unread book

The legend is fragile
and hard to decipher

Who could have written it all
who could have made us to be
like stone statues
in the hall of a paper temple
calling down the gods
with our frail white fists
frozen in the air

Hoping
for some origami sage
to unfold our lives
wanting art
like an arrogant lover
wanting to find
immortality in its arms

                        Bana Witt
